Letter to Self

Dear Self,

I am growing increasingly anxious to note your distinct lack of output in recent days. I have visited your site on numerous occasions this past week to review statistics for numbers of visitors and check for comments, and have quite frankly been dismayed by your lack of activity. I would urge you to consider the impact that this will have on your readership. If you have the slightest regard for the people that take the trouble to read your ramblings then I suggest you pull your finger out and get posting!

Regards, C.

Dear Conscience

Thank you for your input. To tell you the truth I have been rather busy recently, doing a spot of decorating before Christmas and all those visitors. Of course I care deeply about my readership, so much so that I agonize about whether a post is actually going to interest anyone, or even drive away a follower – and when you have as few as I do that matters!

Sometimes I read the Freshly Pressed and feel disheartened by the gulf in quality between my own work and those that have made the big time. The more I read, the more I doubt the value of my own contribution.

Regards, S.

Dear Self

That’s simply not good enough. If you truly want to be a writer then you have to write! Of course you can think of a thousand other things to do, we all can. But if you just stop and think about one of those things that you need to do – maybe something as mundane as hanging wallpaper from a beginner’s perspective – then you will find that your whole life can provide the kind of inspiration for a post that will keep you in material for as long as you want to write. Hope this helps,

C.

Dear Conscience

You are of course right as usual. I feel a little bit silly now. After all, those other blogs may well be excellent, but they are not my experience. I have to write about what I know, I see that now. Thanks for the pep talk C, as it happens I do feel a blog coming on, I do hope you like it. x

  1. Ah, yes. My own Conscience has to have these sort of discussions with my Self from time to time. Sometimes the Conscience has to whip the Self into shape. Self tends to be whiny and makes excuses a little too often for Conscience’s sake. Sometimes browbeating works, sometimes the carrot. Chocolate works best. Though my Hips start complaining then. 😉

  2. Please don’t compare your work with Freshly Pressed. Each writer needs his/her own voice and to attempt to comform your voice and viewpoint to those on Freshly Pressed is abandoning your own path to follow another.

  3. I like this because have done it lots of times but haven’t yet got to that point of having it on paper or in the blog. But you’re giving me new thoughts. And if I finally do, I should be thanking you for the inspiration. 🙂 Blessings to you and your family.

      • Hi James, lovely to see your reply. Oh gee, I remembered too late and before I could do anything my internet went crazy. Oh yeah, it happens and often when I’m in the middle of something 🙂 This time I made sure to be quick before it catches me again… hahaha.. Do drop by when you have the time. Would love to see you in the blog. Blessings! – Ellen
